Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining traction in India, and one of the key factors consumers look for is range. While current models offer around 500 km, range anxiety remains. An Indian start-up, Aeterna Motors, aims to revolutionize this with an EV capable of delivering over 1,000 km on a single charge using next-generation solid-state battery technology.
Solid State Battery Technology Explained
Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries that use flammable liquid electrolytes and porous membranes, solid-state batteries utilize solid materials like ceramic or glass to transport ions between electrodes. These batteries offer several advantages:
- Higher Energy Density: They can store two to three times more energy without significant space increases.
- Faster Charging: Solid state batteries charge faster than lithium-ion batteries.
- Slower Degradation: They degrade at a slower rate compared to conventional batteries.
However, challenges remain: cost (solid-state batteries are currently more expensive), and manufacturing complexity.
Aeterna Motors' Vision
Aeterna Motors, a Bengaluru-based start-up, aims to integrate solid-state cells directly into their EV's structural frame. Their Gen Alpha concept is designed for aerodynamics, featuring a streamlined body, smooth underbody, and butterfly-inspired LED lighting. The EV is expected to have a range of 1000 km on a single charge, produce between 295 PS to 335 PS, and reach a top speed limited to 190 kmph.
Key Features:
- Battery Capacity: 130 kWh to 150 kWh
- Power Output: Around 295 PS to 335 PS (rear-wheel drive)
- Safety & Premium Features: Level 2 ADAS, and more.
Aeterna Motors is working diligently towards launching their Gen Alpha EV by 2029, aiming to make a significant impact on India's EV market.
