JSW’s First SUV Launch Delayed: Report

Sajjan Jindal’s JSW Group is setting up its own independent passenger vehicle business in India. The first product, expected to be a premium plug-in hybrid SUV (a rebadged Chery Jetour T2), will now launch in mid-December instead of around Diwali this year, according to The BusinessLine.

Signs of a potential delay had been present for some time. Establishing a new automotive company is complex, involving setting up manufacturing and retail networks. JSW hadn't been making steady progress on these fronts, suggesting an inevitable launch push.
The Delay: A Glimpse into Challenges
- Parts Licensing Issues: A previous Reuters letter hinted at delays due to challenges in licensing Chinese part imports. JSW plans to assemble the T2 at its Maharashtra plant using CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits, making these import licenses crucial.
- Quality Control Rules: India's stringent quality control rules require foreign suppliers to obtain local certifications before importing, causing delays and additional costs. JSW has requested faster approvals for Chinese suppliers who will provide safety glass for windshields and sunroofs.
JSW’s Future Plans
Moving forward, JSW intends to partner with dealers in various cities and focus on building a strong local supply network, gradually increasing localization.
