We Have Started Blending BioGas In CNG: BPCL In Official Video

Earlier this month, the Indian government approved a Rs 23,731 crore national plan to scale up compressed biogas production. Known as the GOBARdhan scheme, it focuses on producing Compressed Biogas (CBG) from food waste, cattle dung, and crop residue.
Days after this announcement, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) released an official video confirming its start of blending biogas with CNG.
In the video, BPCL highlights that CNG vehicles are now greener than ever due to this new blend. CBG is produced from sustainable sources, unlike conventional CNG sourced from fossil fuels.
The process involves mixing CBG with CNG before it reaches pumps, allowing for its use in standard CNG vehicles. India already has existing CBG plants, and the government aims to expand this network under the new scheme.
Currently, only BPCL has released a video about CBG blending with CNG. While some comments criticize the government’s move, claiming reduced fuel efficiency, there is no verified evidence to support these claims. Both compressed biogas (CBG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) consist primarily of methane and perform similarly in engines when purified and blended appropriately.
Brands like Maruti have also expressed plans to invest in biogas plants, suggesting a future where vehicles may be compatible with 100% CBG. The current E20 blending has sparked some confusion among car owners, with reports indicating a shift towards CNG and hybrid vehicles due to perceived issues with E20. Public reaction to CBG blending in CNG remains to be seen.
