The Hindustan Ambassador is undeniably one of, if not the most iconic cars ever sold in India. For decades, it served politicians, government officials, diplomats, and families across the nation. However, after its production ceased in 2014, after 56 years, this legend lost its place. Yet, the Ambassador retains a fiercely loyal fan base. Many owners restore and modify this classic sedan. Recently, a video of a uniquely modified Ambassador has gone viral, captivating the attention of Ambassador enthusiasts. The reason? It’s been transformed into a pickup truck.
Hindustan Ambassador turned into a pickup truck
A video showcasing this remarkable modification has been shared on YouTube by Harbhejsidhu on their channel. The video begins with the vlogger introducing the owner and their unique Ambassador pickup truck. He then delves into the vehicle’s history, revealing that this particular model is based on a 2010 Hindustan Ambassador.
Unlike typical cosmetic modifications, this owner completely reimagined the body style, converting the original four-door sedan into a two-door pickup truck. The most striking change is evident from the side—the rear portion of the cabin, from the B-pillar onwards, has been removed. However, the owner thoughtfully retained the original lower body section and factory body lines, ensuring the truck still resembles an Ambassador.
This transformation was driven by the owner’s passion for motorcycles. He operates a garage primarily dedicated to repairing superbikes. He opted to build this custom pickup rather than purchasing a commercial one because he needed a vehicle to transport his motorcycles comfortably during road trips. The large cargo bed accommodates motorcycles, camping gear, and luggage with ease. He’s already taken this vehicle on trips to Himachal Pradesh with his bikes in tow.
A Lot of Custom Touches
The video highlights numerous exterior enhancements beyond the pickup conversion. Up front, the original round headlamps have been swapped for modern projector LED units, and the grille has been replaced with a custom-made chrome metal grille featuring the Ambassador badge in the center while preserving the classic chrome front bumper for aesthetic balance.
The most noticeable change is the pickup bed, seamlessly integrated behind the two front doors, complete with a custom-built wooden floor. The tailgate has also been redesigned for this conversion. Black steel wheels with chrome bowl-shaped hubcaps and thick-profile tires further enhance the truck’s rugged, off-road appeal.
